Kung Fu for Adults

At Apex, we understand that people come in all shapes and sizes and want to practice martial arts for different reasons. We provide two programs for our adult students: Shaolin Kung Fu and Sanda/Sanshou. We welcome you to come train with us, regardless if you’re a couch potato looking to get into shape or a competitive athlete looking to compete in Sanshou fighting.

All our classes begin with a proper warmup which includes running, jumping rope, and flexibility exercises.

Shaolin Kung Fu

In this class, you will learn the basics movements of Songshan Shaolin Kung Fu, as taught at the Shaolin Temple in China. You will also learn the traditional Shaolin empty hand and weapon forms, which will improve your co-ordination, strength, agility, flexibility, and mental focus.

Our instructors keep the training fun but challenging, and you will be pushed to become the best you can be. Over time you will be able to move with grace and agility, and be able to perform the same feats of the Shaolin monks (well, almost).

Those who are more ambitious may go on to learn more advanced movements including those of modern wushu, and specialize in competition or martial arts performance. We offer training in a wide variety of kung fu weapons, including staff, broadsword, straightsword, spear, 9 section whip, leather bullwhip, 3-section staff, long handled ‘pudao ‘ broadsword, rope dart, meteor hammer, etc.

Sanda/Sanshou

This program is geared for those who seek to study martial arts for combative skill. Our Sanda/Sanshou program is ideal for those wanting to train for self defence or to compete in combat sports.

The emphasis of this program is on developing realistic fighting skills. The class teaches you the combat techniques that work and discard those that don’t. The proper execution of these techniques is refined through shadow boxing and padwork, and then put to the test in live sparring situations with safety gear and resisting opponents.

In Sanda/Sanshou, you will learn the art of punching, kicking, and wrestling/throwing. You will develop high levels of fitness to enhance your fighting skill as well as greater self confidence. Sparring will give you actual combat experience, and will prove to yourself which techniques you can realistically perform on a resisting opponent.

Competition in Sanshou fights and tournaments is also available to interested students, and specific combat conditioning will be given to our fighters.
